Around the world plastic pellets have been found in great numbers on beaches. How they got there is unclear, but what is clear is their effect on the environment, especially the wildlife both on the shoreline and the water. There have been press reports that fish are mistakenly swallowing the pellets for food. These pellets have been lost from somewhere in the plastics processing chain, possibly from a factory, warehouse or during transportation. Probably the pellets have been washed down a drain or spilled on open ground.
The solution to this problem is in the hands of the plastics industry. The British Plastic Federation (BPF) in the UK has launched ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ to combat this problem and are appealing to all organisations involved in the processing or handling of plastic pellets to “sign the pledge” and agree to implement measures that will help achieve zero pellet loss. Distrupol has already signed the pledge and encourages other organisations in the industry to do the same.
